<span style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 12pt; text-align: justify;">There are three recognized mesothelioma cell-types. Between 50 and 70% of all mesotheliomas are of the epithelial variety. While prognosis is generally poor, it is considered less aggressive than sarcomatoid mesothelioma and biphasic mesothelioma, which comprise the remainder of cell type diagnoses.</span><br />

Mesothelial cells assist in general organ functions. The mesothelium is particularly important to organs that are commonly in motion, such as expansion or contraction of the lungs, stomach, or heart. Lubrication from the mesothelial cells allows free range of motion within the body. The mesothelium of the chest, abdomen, and cardiac cavity are called the pleura, the peritoneum, and the pericardium, respectively. Each of these groupings of mesothelial cells is extremely critical to the functions of the body structures which they encompass.</span></div>

Benign tumors of the mesothelium are known to occur, but are much more rare than malignant mesothelial tumors.</span><br />

<span style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 12pt; text-align: justify;">Incidence of mesothelioma is still quite rare, with only 2,500-3000 diagnoses in the United States each year. There was a spike in reported diagnoses between 1970 and 1984, which has been attributed to the latency period between diagnosis and the height of industrial exposures, which occurred roughly 40-60 years prior to this time. Exposure was common in nearly all industries but was particularly common in the WWII-era military industrial cycle, including</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 12pt; text-align: justify;"> </span><span style="background-color: white; color: blue; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 12pt; text-align: justify;">Navy Shipyards</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 12pt; text-align: justify;">.</span><br />

<span style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 12pt; text-align: justify;">Although this cancer is much more common in men over the age of 60 (largely attributed to the industrial exposures within male-dominated industries), mesothelioma in women and children has been described as well.</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 12pt; text-align: justify;"> </span><span style="background-color: white; color: blue; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 12pt; text-align: justify;">Mesothelioma causes</span><span style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 12pt; text-align: justify;"> </span><span style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 12pt; text-align: justify;">for diagnosis in women and children are mainly attributed to secondary exposure to asbestos, as it was not uncommon for men to bring asbestos back into the home on their body or clothing if proper cleaning facilities were not available on site.</span><br />

<span style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 12pt; text-align: justify;">Mesothelioma is diagnosed through a comprehensive combination of biopsy and imaging scans.</span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.799999237060547px; text-align: justify;">

<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 12pt;">Mesothelioma can be a difficult malignancy to diagnose because the symptoms of the disease closely resemble other respiratory conditions, and because the pathology can be very difficult to distinguish from adenocarcinoma of the lung. For this reason, misdiagnosis is not uncommon in mesothelioma patients.</span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 12pt;"> </span><span style="color: blue; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 12pt;">Symptoms of mesothelioma</span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 12pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 12pt;">include chest pain, chronic cough, effusions of the chest and abdomen, and the presence of blood in lung fluid.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 12pt; text-align: justify;">Diagnostic surgeries, including a biopsy, will typically be required to determine the type of malignant cells that are present in the body. Typically a body imaging scan, including a magnetic resonance image (MRI), computer topography (CT scan), and/or positron emission tomography (PET), will be required to determine the extent and location of the disease.</span><br />

A combination of Alimta® and Cisplatin is currently the only FDA approved chemotherapy regimen, though several clinical trials are currently in progress utilizing other drugs including Gemcitabine and Onconase, that may lead to new treatment options that provide a benefit for patients.</span><br />

<span style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 12pt; text-align: justify;">Radiation therapy is also utilized, but typically in conjunction with other treatment methods like surgery and chemotherapy. Surgical resection of mesothelioma is possible in early-stage-diagnosed patients. Diagnostic and palliative procedures such as thoracentesis and pleurodesis are also commonly performed in patients with malignant mesothelioma in order to minimize cancer-related symptoms.</span><br />

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Lung mesothelioma, and sometimes referred to as mesothelioma disease, is a rare but deadly form of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. On average, between 2,000 and 3,000 new cases are diagnosed each year in the United States, most often in Caucasian males in the 60-80 age groups. However, anyone who comes in contact with airborne asbestos fibers can be at risk of becoming a mesothelioma victim. The disease takes many years to develop, and although it can be treated to some extent, it is not curable.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Though <span style="color: #126f96;">mesothelioma cancer</span> can form in parts of the body, the disease tends to affect two vital areas: the cardiovascular system and the abdominal organs. Mesothelioma tumors form in the sacs surrounding the lungs, heart, and abdominal wall because the asbestos fibers that cause them are either inhaled or swallowed. Lung (pleural) mesothelioma is the most commonly diagnosed form of <span style="color: #126f96;">asbestos cancer</span>.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">The widespread use of fibrous asbestos minerals may have had its benefits as a fire retardant and heat-resistant material, but its presence in millions of homes and workplaces has its darker side. As early as the 1890s, physicians in Great Britain began reporting that workers exposed to asbestos in jobsites were contracting respiratory illnesses and cancers. These early indications that asbestos were a serious health risk to humans were dismissed by the asbestos mining industry at first. When more evidence linking <span style="color: #126f96;">asbestos exposure</span> to lung cancer and asbestosis surfaced in the 1920s, the asbestos industry ruthlessly suppressed it. Even when the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) investigated the causal relationship between asbestos and a rare cancer called mesothelioma in the 1970s, the industry continued to stonewall and deny that asbestos was dangerous.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 17.4pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">As a result of the asbestos industry’s reckless suppression of medical data which supported many claims that its product was dangerous, millions of jobsites, public buildings, private homes, and even vehicles now contain asbestos. Although asbestos isn’t currently used in new construction or in modern ships, planes, and planes, it’s still present in structures or vehicles manufactured in the U.S. during World War II and the early Cold War era.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 17.4pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Consequently, almost anyone in the U.S. can be exposed to asbestos fibers. Any activity that involves tearing down of walls, sawing old metal pipes, or removing worn out insulation stirs up the fibrous dust. Once asbestos fibers are in the air, they can be breathed in or swallowed by the unwary. These fibers lodge in the lining of the lungs or abdominal organs and cause irritation in the tissue. Over time, these irritations can mutate into tumors which cause lung mesothelioma. This process, however, takes many years and is hard to detect. A mesothelioma victim is often diagnosed 20, 30, even 50 years after initial exposure. By the time a doctor realizes that the patient has mesothelioma, it is sometimes too late to provide effective treatment.<br /><br /><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 24.5pt; margin: 4.8pt 0in 0.05in; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 20.5pt;">About Lung Mesothelioma<br /><br /><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 17.4pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">The type of mesothelioma which affects the lungs is known as pleural mesothelioma, though it can also be referred to as lung mesothelioma. Currently, it is the most common type of mesothelioma. Pleural mesothelioma begins when someone breathes in asbestos fibers, typically at a worksite, in an older public facility, or in a private residence. The asbestos fibers then find their way into the body’s pleural lining and cause irritation in the tissue. Eventually, the irritated tissue’s cells can mutate into cancerous growths.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 17.4pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Over time, the tumors that form in the pleural lining interfere with the lungs’ ability to expand and constrict properly. This makes breathing difficult and often painful. As the tumors grow and spread, the pain and difficulty in breathing increase accordingly. Unfortunately, the slow development of mesothelium in human tissue is protracted and the symptoms of pleural mesothelioma resemble those of common respiratory illnesses.<br /><br /><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 24.5pt; margin: 4.8pt 0in 0.05in; text-align: justify;">

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">One of the factors that make the disease difficult to detect is that symptoms of mesothelioma usually do not show up until 20 to 50 years after exposure to asbestos. Symptoms are what a patient feels, while signs are the outward manifestations of a disease that doctors and other people notice. Often, lung (pleural) <span style="color: #126f96;">mesothelioma symptoms</span> and signs mimic those of common respiratory illnesses, including pneumonia. These include:<o:p></o:p></span></div>

Some patients can also suffer from a collapsed lung (pneumothorax). Mesothelioma can also metastasize beyond the affected lung and attack either the other lung or additional organs. Other organs that can be affected are the pericardial sac, the lining which surrounds the heart and the chest wall.<br /><br /><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 24.5pt; margin: 4.8pt 0in 0.05in; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 20.5pt;">Treatment Options<br /><br /><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 17.4pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">There are three major <span style="color: #126f96;">mesothelioma treatment</span> options: surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. None of them cure the cancer, but they can add months, even years, to a mesothelioma patient’s life. Surgery is the most invasive procedure to treat lung mesothelioma. For pleural mesothelioma, a surgeon cuts through the ribs in order to reach the affected areas. There are currently two types of surgical procedures: pleurectomy/decortication (the removal of the pleural lining), and the more radical extrapleural pneumonectomy (surgical resection of the affected lung and the surrounding parietal and visceral pleura). In both cases, surgeons may take out either part of or the complete diaphragm and the pericardial sac. In addition, one or more ribs are removed from the patient’s body as a result of these procedures.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 17.4pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Chemotherapy is less invasive than surgery and aids in reducing the size of mesothelioma tumors in the pleural lining. Chemotherapy is the use of drugs that attack or kill cells that divide quickly, like cancer cells. When used in tandem with surgery or radiation treatments, the procedure is called “combined modality treatment.” Chemotherapy kills cancers with some degree of success, but it also attacks healthy cells that divide quickly, such as hair follicles, blood cells or cells found in the digestive system. This causes adverse side effects that include hair loss, suppression of the immune system, and nausea. Doctors use chemotherapy to reduce the size of tumors on the pleural lining and relieve the pressure on the affected lung. However, chemotherapy does not cure mesothelioma; it only helps to relieve some of the symptoms and extend a patient’s life expectancy.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 17.4pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">Radiation, when applied in conjunction with extra pleural pneumonectomy surgery, can be an effective form of treatment for mesothelioma. Radiation involves the killing of cancer cells with doses of high energy rays. This treatment is used exclusively in cases of pleural mesothelioma, and can be used either to prevent cancer from returning or to slow down the cancer’s progress in cases where surgery is not a viable option. Targeted radiation treatments also help to relieve a patient’s pain.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 17.4pt; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">It is important to note that while these treatments control the spread of asbestos related cancer in the pleural region, there is currently no cure for mesothelioma in any of its varieties.<br /><br /><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 24.5pt; margin: 4.8pt 0in 0.05in; text-align: justify;">

<b><a href="http://www.mesothelioma-law-firm.co/2014/04/what-is-mesothelioma.html" style="color: #65bddf; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">Mesothelioma</a></b> is a form of cancer that is almost always caused by exposure to asbestos. In this disease, malignant cell develop in the mesothelium, a protective lining that covers most of the organs. The most common site is the peritoneum (the lining of the abdominal cavity), the heart, the pericardium (a sac that surround the heart) or tunica virginals.<br /><br />Most people who develop mesothelioma have worked in jobs where they inhaled or ingested asbestos fibers, or were exposed to airborne asbestos dust and fibers in other ways. Washing clothes of a family member who worked with asbestos also creates a risk for developing mesothelioma. Unlike lung cancer, there seems to be no association between mesothelioma and tobacco smoking, but smoking greatly increases the risk of other asbestos-induced cancers.<br /><br />Signs and symptoms of mesothelioma include shortness of breath due to pleural effusion (fluid between the lung and the chest wall), chest wall pain and constitutional signs such as unexplained weight loss. The diagnosis may be suspected based on chest X-ray and CT scan findings, but must be confirmed either by examining serous effusion cytology or with a biopsy (removing a sample of the suspicious tissue). A thoracoscopy (inserting a tube with a camera into the chest) can be used to acquire biopsy material, and allows the introduction of the substances such as talc to obliterate the pleural space (a procedure called pleurodesis), preventing more fluid from accumulating and pressing on the lung. Despite treatment with chemotherapy, radiation therapy or something surgery, mesothelioma carries a poor prognosis. Research about screening tests for the early detection of mesothelioma is ongoing.<br /><br /><b>Signs and symptoms</b><br /><br />symptoms or signs of mesothelioma may not appear until 20 to 50 years (or more) after exposure to asbestos. Shortness of breath, cough, and pain in the chest due to an accumulation of fluid in the pleural space (pleural effusion) are often symptoms of pleural mesothelioma.<br /><br />symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include weight loss and cachexia, abdominal swelling and pain due to ascites (a buildup of fluid in the abdominal cavity). Other symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma may include bowel obstruction, blood clotting abnormalities, anemia, and fever. if the cancer has spread beyond the mesothelium to other parts of the body, symptoms may include pain, trouble swallowing, or swelling of the neck or face.<br /><br />These symptoms may be caused by mesothelioma or by other, less serious conditions.<br /><br />mesothelioma that affects the pleura can cause these signs and symptoms.<br /><br /><ul>
<li>Chest wall pain </li>
<li>Pleural effusion, or fluid surrounding the lung</li>
<li>Shortness of breath </li>
<li>Fatigue or anemia</li>
<li>Wheezing, hoarseness, or cough</li>
<li>Blood in the sputum (fluid) coughed up (hemoptysis)</li>
</ul>
In severe cases, the person may have many tumor masses. The individual may develop a pneumothorax, or collapse of the lung. The disease may metastasize, or spread to other parts of the body.<br /><br />Tumor that affect the abdominal cavity often do not cause symptoms until they are at a late stage. Symtopms include:<br /><br /><br /><ul>
<li>Abdominal</li>
<li>Ascites, or an abnormal buildup of fluid in the abdomen</li>
<li>A mass in the abdomen</li>
<li>Problems with bowel function</li>
<li>Weight loss</li>
</ul>
<br /><br />In severe cases of the disease, the following signs and symptoms<br /><br /><ul>
<li>Blood clots in the veins, which may cause thrombophlebitis </li>
<li>Disseminated intravascular coagulation, a disorder causing severe bleeding in many body organs</li>
<li>Jaundice, or yellowing of the eyes and skin</li>
<li>Low blood sugar level </li>
<li>Plural effusion</li>
<li>Pulmonary emboli, or blood clots in the arteries of the lungs</li>
<li>Severe ascites </li>
</ul>
<br />A mesothelioma does not usually spread to the bone, brain, or adrenal glands. Pleural tumors are usually found only on one side of the lungs.<br /><br /><b>Cause </b><br /><br />Working with asbestos is the major risk factor for mesothelioma. In the United States, asbestos is the major causes of malignant mesothelioma. and has been considered "indisputably" associated with the development of mesothelioma. Indeed, the relationship between asbestos and mesothelioma is so strong that many consider mesothelioma "signal" or "sentinel" tumor. A history of asbestos exposure exists in most cases. However, mesothelioma has been reported in some individuals without any known exposure to asbestos. In rare cases, mesothelioma has also been association with irradiation, intrapleural thorium dioxide (Thorotrast), and inhalation of other fibrous silicates, such as erionite. Some studies suggest that simian virus 40 (SV40) may act as a cofactor in the development of mesothelioma. This has been confirmed in animal studies, but studies in humans are inconclusive.<br /><br />Source http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mesothelioma<br />

<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">There are several risk factors that increase the likelihood that a person will develop</span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="color: blue;">mesothelioma</span>. The primary risk factor is</span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="color: blue;">asbestos exposure</span>. Exposure to this very harmful substance can significantly enhance the chances of contracting the disease. Smoking does not have a direct causal relationship with mesothelioma but is a significant compounding factor and increases the chances of developing the disease. Other less common secondary factors include exposure to radiation, zeolite, simian virus 40 (SV40) and erionite. We discuss each of these risk factors in more detail below. <span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Exposure to asbestos is the leading risk factor associated with mesothelioma. Asbestos is an insulating material comprised of magnesium-silicate mineral fibers. It was favored by builders and contractors for many years for its low heat conductivity and resistance to melting and burning. Since researchers have identified more and more links between mesothelioma and exposure to asbestos, the material is now less widely used. Prior to this discovery, however, millions of Americans have experienced serious exposure to this harmful substance.<br /><br /><o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">It has long been known that smoking is hazardous to one's health, causing a marked increase in instances of<span class="apple-converted-space"> </span><span style="text-decoration: none;">mesothelioma lung cancer</span><span class="apple-converted-space"> </span>among those who smoke regularly. However, smokers who are or have been exposed to asbestos carry a much higher risk of developing an even more serious disease - malignant<span class="apple-converted-space"> </span><span style="text-decoration: none;">mesothelioma</span>, a difficult-to-treat cancer that affects the lining of the lungs (<span style="text-decoration: none;">pleural mesothelioma</span>), heart (<span style="text-decoration: none;">pericardial mesothelioma</span>), or abdomen (<span style="text-decoration: none;">peritoneal mesothelioma</span>).<br /><br /><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 12pt; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Exposure to asbestos has been identified as the major cause of<span class="apple-converted-space"> </span><span style="text-decoration: none;">mesothelioma cancer</span>. The disease occurs when an individual inhales sharp asbestos fibers, which then become lodged in the lungs. Smoking, according to the Centers for Disease Control, weakens the lungs and decreases a body's ability to remove asbestos fibers. Further, cigarette smoke irritates the air passages and causes them to produce more mucus which, in turn, blocks the passage of air and the dispelling of fibers.<br /><br /><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 12pt; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">According to a variety of studies that have been performed throughout the last two decades, while cigarette smoking alone does not lead to mesothelioma, cigarette smokers who are exposed to asbestos are about 50 to 84 times more likely to develop<span class="apple-converted-space"> </span><span style="text-decoration: none;">asbestos lung cancer</span><span class="apple-converted-space"> </span>and, most experts agree, these smokers are at least twice as likely to develop mesothelioma.<br /><br /><o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Exposure to asbestos particles is one of the principal causes of</span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="color: blue;">mesothelioma cancer</span>, also known as asbestos cancer. As a naturally occurring mineral with useful commercial applications, asbestos is found in plumbing, insulation and other building materials and products.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 12pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Through the liberal commercial use of this material, most people in the United States and other industrial nations have been or will be exposed to loose, airborne particles in their work or home environments, this exposure can create significant health hazards.<br /><br /><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.799999237060547px; text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;">Commercial Applications<br /><br /><o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 12pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Over 700,000</span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="color: blue;">schools</span></span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">and buildings in the United States today contain asbestos insulation as reported by the US Environmental Protection Agency. Asbestos exposure doesn't stop there, however. Asbestos is often found in ship yards, manufacturing facilities, railway facilities and construction sites. Blue collar workers are at the highest risk for developing mesothelioma due to occupational exposure. They typically work in</span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="color: blue;">aluminum plants</span>,</span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="color: blue;">oil refineries</span>,</span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="color: blue;">chemical plants</span>, mines, factories,</span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="color: blue;">shipyards</span>, construction sites and railroads. Employees at insulation and gas mask manufacturing facilities are also at risk. The</span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="color: blue;">occupations</span></span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">most widely affected are miners, factory workers, railroad workers, ship builders and construction workers - especially those who install asbestos-containing insulation. Sometimes family members related to the workers receive second hand exposure to asbestos from the dust and fibers that were brought home on the workers clothes and also become at risk for contracting mesothelioma.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 12pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">There are six different types of asbestos: chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite, tremolite, anthophyllite and actinolite. These six mineral types are divided into two classifications, serpentine and amphibole. Chrysotile is the only mineral in the serpentine class. As known carcinogens both classes of asbestos can cause mesothelioma.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 12pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">In the United States, chrysotile was the most commonly used asbestos mineral, and is known for its curly fibers that can be easily woven into fabrics. Applications of chrysotile include drywall compound, plaster, vinyl floor tiles, roofing materials, acoustic ceilings, fireproofing, caulk, brake pads and shoes, stage curtains, fire blankets and dental cast linings.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 12pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Amosite and crocidolite are the other more common asbestos minerals used, though their application is not as extensive as chrysotile. Products manufactured out of these asbestos minerals include insulation board, ceiling tiles and casing for water services.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 12pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">In the past ten years, trace amounts of asbestos have been found in talc, a leading ingredient in crayons.<br /><br /><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.799999237060547px; text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;">Exposure and Health Risks<br /><br /><o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 12pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">The extensive use of asbestos across many different industries exposes not only those individuals working in the manufacturing of raw asbestos or working with asbestos-related products, but also individuals who may have asbestos in their homes, churches or schools. Further, asbestos particles may cling to the clothing or hair of an individual working with asbestos and potentially contaminate others.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 12pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Though chrysotile is the most common form of asbestos used in products and is a known carcinogen, amosite and crocidolite asbestos are the most hazardous to health. All types of asbestos can linger in an individual’s lungs for many years after exposure, but amosite and crocidolite are the most persistent, lingering particles.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 12pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">There is a higher risk for individuals working in asbestos-related environments, though many individuals with minimal exposure can also have damage that can lead to mesothelioma cancer or other diseases.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 12pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Although asbestos exposure may have hit its peak from the turn of the twentieth century through the 1970s, many individuals are still being subjected to asbestos particles. Arguably, the most recent and tragic mass exposure resulted from the attacks on 9/11, where tons of asbestos particles were released into the air, harming thousands of rescue workers and individuals living near Ground Zero. Diagnosed with</span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="color: blue;">asbestos cancer</span></span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">due to their prolonged, persistent exposure, many brave firefighters, police and rescue workers continue to suffer.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 12pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Further, many individuals continue to be exposed to asbestos in older homes. With the boom of Do-It-Yourself projects, many homeowners are tackling renovations without knowing the potential health risks. Attempting renovations in these environments may disturb asbestos causing it to become airborne and inhaled. Without knowledge of where asbestos may be located in these homes, there is a significant risk of accidental exposure, and any homeowner should have professional do a thorough inspection before any projects begin. Removal should always be handled by a professional contractor and should not be attempted by homeowners.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 12pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">One of the groups hardest hit from asbestos-related diseases are America’s veterans. All branches of the United States military used equipment, gear and products laden with asbestos, unwittingly exposing young men and women between the 1940s and late 1970s. Most</span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="color: blue;">veterans</span></span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">repeatedly exposed to asbestos suffer from</span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="color: blue;">mesothelioma disease</span>.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 12pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">For over one hundred years, almost every product that we can come in contact with may have been produced with asbestos components. From decorative household items, to products manufactured to protect firefighters, to dental products, asbestos has been the silent, deadly part of recent American industry.<br /><br /><o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Some research points to the fact that inhaled asbestos fibers cause a physical irritation resulting in</span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="color: blue;">mesothelioma</span></span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">rather than the cancer being caused by a reaction that is more chemical in nature. As fibers are inhaled through the mouth and nose they are cleared from the body by adhering to mucus in the nose, throat and airways and then get expelled by coughing or swallowing. The Amphibole fibers (long and thin) do not clear as easily and it is therefore thought that they can embed into the lining of the lungs, chest or stomach causing scarring and inflammation which increases the risk for mesothelioma cancer.</span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="color: blue;">Mesothelioma symptoms</span></span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">can be detected as early as ten years after exposure and can incubate as long as forty years.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

In fact, people exposed to asbestos are seven times more likely to develop lung cancer over the general public. Workers who sustain high levels of asbestos exposure are more likely to die from asbestosis, lung cancer or mesothelioma than any other disease. It is also believed that the action of coughing up and swallowing asbestos could contribute to a form of mesothelioma originating in the abdomen called peritoneal mesothelioma. This disease has been found to exist in other organs of the body as well such as the larynx, pancreas and colon, but those instances are extremely limited compared to lung cancer incidents.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.799999237060547px; text-align: justify;" />

<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 12pt;">The chance of developing mesothelioma is in direct proportion to the duration and amount of asbestos exposure that an individual sustains. Those who are exposed to high levels of asbestos at a young age, for long periods of time have a greater risk of being</span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 12pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 12pt;"><span style="color: blue;">diagnosed with mesothelioma</span></span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 12pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 12pt;">than those who have short, low level exposure. Another important consideration is that the</span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 12pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 12pt;"><span style="color: blue;">mesothelioma latency period</span></span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 12pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 12pt;">is very long. Often, twenty to forty years can elapse from the time of exposure to diagnosis. Genetic factors can also play a role which explains why not everyone exposed to asbestos develops an asbestos related disease.<br /><br />Source <o:p></o:p></span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small;"><span style="line-height: 16px;">http://www.mesothelioma.com/mesothelioma/risk-factors/asbestos-exposure.htm</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">What Causes Mesothelioma?</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">Mesothelioma is a <span style="color: blue;">cancer</span> that occurs in the mesothelium, a thin membrane encompassing the body’s internal organs and cavities. Mesothelioma is caused by <span style="color: blue;">asbestos exposure</span>. Asbestos fibers that are inhaled through the mouth and nose may eventually become embedded in the lining of the lungs, causing harmful inflammation of the <span style="color: blue;">pleura</span> and resulting in <span style="color: blue;">mesothelioma</span> or asbestosis (scar tissue formation in the lungs). It has also been found that swallowing <span style="color: blue;">asbestos fibers</span> could contribute to a form of the malignancy originating in the abdomen known as peritoneal mesothelioma.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">Mesothelioma generally results from occupational asbestos exposure, but there are instances of environmental exposure that can also cause <span style="color: blue;">the disease</span>. Oftentimes a family member can be affected indirectly by second hand exposure from an asbestos worker’s soiled work clothes.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">Asbestos was an effective insulation material. It was used liberally in <span style="color: blue;">commercial and industrial products</span> in the United States until being regulated in a joint effort between the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Environmental Protection Agency in 1989. Occupational exposure was common among workers who encountered these products in many industries including shipbuilding, power plants, and other industrial settings.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">Asbestos insulation workers appear to have the highest rate of asbestos related disease. One study reports that almost six percent of asbestos workers fall victim to mesothelioma or experience <span style="color: blue;">respiratory symptoms</span>. Asbestos insulation workers are over 300 times more likely to be diagnosed with mesothelioma than those with no exposure history.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 18pt;">How does exposure to asbestos cause mesothelioma?</span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">Asbestos fibers are microscopic, though they are also quite durable. For this reason, asbestos was used in a number of different industrial compounds to enhance strength and resistance to temperature extremes- two properties at which the mineral is highly adept. Asbestos exposure most often occurred among <span style="color: blue;">individuals who worked extensively with asbestos</span> or asbestos-containing materials. Friable asbestos (meaning loose or airborne fibers) is easily inhaled- often without the exposed person realizing.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">When inhaled, asbestos lodges easily in the outer lung tissue and within the mesothelium. The <span style="color: blue;">mesothelium</span> is a thin membrane of cells which produces a lubricating fluid on the surface of the organs. This lubricant allows the lung and other internal structures to expand, contract, and move freely without friction in the body cavity. There is a great deal of <span style="color: blue;">latency associated with mesothelioma</span>between exposure to asbestos and the onset of symptoms.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">Pleural mesothelioma is the most common variety of the disease and forms on the pleural membrane, which surrounds the lung and chest cavity. Peritoneal mesothelioma is less common and forms on the surface of the peritoneum, a thin membrane surrounding the abdominal cavity. Pericardial mesothelioma is the least common variety of the disease and forms in the cardiac cavity that envelops the heart, a mesothelial membrane known as the pericardium.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">Inhaled asbestos fibers are known to be the <span style="color: blue;">cause of pleural mesothelioma</span>, whereas ingested asbestos fibers are the cause of peritoneal mesothelioma. While the exact causal nature between asbestos and pericardial mesothelioma is not known, physicians and <span style="color: blue;">cancer researchers</span> surmise asbestos fibers in the blood stream lodge in the outer layers of the heart’s ventricles and lodge in the pericardium. Once asbestos fibers reach the surface of the peritoneum or pericardium, the inflammation process is essentially the same as it is on the surface of the pleura.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">Primary workplace exposure to the mineral was common in naval shipyards, power plants, railroad infrastructure, and other industrial jobsites. However, asbestos-related mesotheliomas have also been diagnosed in spouses or children of those exposed to asbestos. Workers often brought home dangerous asbestos fibers on their clothing, hair, or person. Those who came into contact with these fibers on the person or their clothing have developed mesothelioma as a result.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">Other Contributing Factors</span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">Mesothelioma is also causally associated with a few other factors, but many of these are attributed to the development of mesothelioma in conjunction with exposure to asbestos.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">Smoking</span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">Those who smoke are at a higher risk of mesothelioma, though smoking is more commonly associated with traditional lung carcinomas. Smoking tends to enhance risk even further in those who were also exposed to asbestos.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">Radiation Exposure</span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">While extremely rare, some mesothelioma patients attribute their diagnosis to exposure to radiation rather than exposure to asbestos. Radiation tends to transform and mutate cell growth patterns and is more commonly associated with brain and blood cancers.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 13.5pt;">Carbon Nanotubes</span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">Research is extremely preliminary in this study, but some laboratory studies indicate a molecular similarity between asbestos mineral fibers and carbon nanotubes. Tests indicate a pronounced risk of mesothelioma in some laboratory animals implanted with carbon nanotubes.<br /><br />Source http://www.mesothelioma.com/mesothelioma/causes/</span></div>

<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">What are the most common warning signs of mesothelioma?</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">Mesothelioma is difficult to <span style="color: blue;">diagnose</span> because the early signs and symptoms of the <span style="color: blue;">disease</span> can be subtle or mistaken. Symptoms are all too frequently ignored or dismissed by people who are inclined to attribute them to common every day ailments. Sometimes patients live with symptoms for up to 6 months before being diagnosed but usually the symptoms are present for two to three months prior to a <span style="color: blue;">mesothelioma</span> diagnosis.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">About 60% of patients diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma experience lower back pain or side chest pain, and there are frequent reports of shortness of breath. Lower numbers of people may experience difficulty swallowing, or have a persistent cough, fever, weight loss or fatigue. Additional symptoms that some patients experience are muscle weakness, loss of sensory capability, coughing up blood, facial and arm swelling, and hoarseness.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">Peritoneal mesothelioma originates in the abdomen and as a result, symptoms often include abdominal pain, weight loss, nausea, and vomiting. Fluid buildup may occur in the abdomen as well as a result of the cancer.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">Asbestos exposure is considered the primary <span style="color: blue;">risk factor</span> for the development of the <span style="color: blue;">cancer</span>. Anyone previously exposed to asbestos displaying any of these symptoms should seek medical attention from their doctor first, only to be referred to a <span style="color: blue;">doctor</span> who specializes in the <span style="color: blue;">treatment</span> of mesothelioma and thoracic <span style="color: blue;">oncology</span> after receiving a positive diagnosis.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 18pt;">How long does it take for mesothelioma symptoms to appear?</span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">One of the most unique facts about mesothelioma is that the disease is characterized by a long latency period that is very often associated with the disease. The latency period is the amount of time that elapses from the first point of asbestos exposure to the point where symptoms begin to appear so that a diagnosis can be made. In some mesothelioma cases the <span style="color: blue;">latency period</span> is reported to be 10 years but the average latency for the majority of cases is between 35 and 40 years. As a result, the cancer often progresses to later<span style="color: blue;">stages</span> before a diagnosis is made. When diagnosed in the later stages, mesothelioma treatment options become more limited and are less effective.</span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">Pleural mesothelioma patients often develop difficulty swallowing (esophageal dysphagia) as the mesothelium continues to grow on the lungs.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">An effusion can occur in mesothelioma patients when there is fluid buildup affecting either the pleura or pericardium. This may need to be drained in a relatively limited surgical procedure to control the effusion and associated symptoms.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">

<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">Hemoptysis, or the symptom of coughing up blood, can have its origins in the lungs, bronchi or trachea of mesothelioma patients.</span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">Nausea is experienced in a number of cancer patients, as it is often a side effect of chemotherapy treatment and sometimes the underlying cancer. Those diagnosed with peritoneal mesothelioma may also experience nausea as a result of increasing abdominal pressure.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 18pt;"><span style="color: blue;">Peritoneal Effusion</span></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">Peritoneal mesothelioma patients may experience a buildup of fluid in the peritoneum as the tumor continues to grow. This can result in an effusion which can inhibit the function of abdominal organs.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">In pleural mesothelioma patients, pleural effusion may develop when there is a large amount of fluid present in the pleura, the lining between the lungs and chest cavity.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">How is mesothelioma staged?<br /><br /><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 12pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Mesothelioma stages are the assessment levels that</span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="color: blue;">doctors</span></span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">utilize to determine the extent of the cancer within the body. Mesothelioma is staged between 1 and 4, depending on severity. Stage 1 mesothelioma, for instance, is highly localized disease, with the</span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="color: blue;">tumor</span></span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">affecting only a limited area and organ tissue. Stage 4 cancer, on the other extreme, is extensive disease, which has spread far beyond the tumor’s origin, affecting other organ tissue and even blood or bone cells.<br /><br /><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 12pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Given how rare mesothelioma is, a formal staging classification exists only for pleural mesothelioma, which affects the lining of the lung and chest cavity. Staging is determined at</span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="color: blue;">diagnosis</span>, using any number of diagnostic procedures. Basic staging can be determined through the use of</span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="color: blue;">imaging</span></span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">scans, which will provide cancer specialists a visual representation of the extent of the tumor within the body. If the results of imaging scans are inconclusive or it appears that the disease is not localized, a physician may request the patient to undergo a needle or surgical biopsy, which can determine if the</span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="color: blue;">malignant</span></span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">cells have</span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="color: blue;">metastasized</span></span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">to the blood or lymph nodes through laboratory testing.<br /><br /><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.799999237060547px; text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;">Mesothelioma Staging Systems<br /><br /><o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 12pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Today, there are three primary staging systems used to assess how far mesothelioma cancer has spread and each system uses four stages to describe the progression of the disease. It is the definition of each stage within the various systems that can vary slightly.<br /><br /><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.799999237060547px; text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13.5pt;"><span style="color: blue;">But chart Staging System</span><o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 12pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">The Butcher staging system is the oldest and most commonly utilized staging system for mesothelioma. This system is focused on defining the location of the primary tumor mass in the body for each stage. The system doesn’t address how many cancer cells are present, how big the tumor is or the level of cancer present in the body overall.<br /><br /><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.799999237060547px; text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13.5pt;"><span style="color: blue;">TNM Staging System</span><o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 12pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">The TNM Staging System, developed by the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC), is similar to staging systems used for other types of cancer. It considers the characteristics of the tumor (T), whether or not lymph nodes are involved (N) and if the cancer has metastasized to other locations in the body (M).<br /><br /><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.799999237060547px; text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13.5pt;"><span style="color: blue;">Brigham Staging System</span><o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 12pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">The Brigham Staging System also has four stages of progression and is very similar to the TNM Staging System. The primary difference between the two is that in addition to defining the location of the tumor, and assessing lymph node involvement and the presence of metastatic disease, the</span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="color: blue;">Brigham System</span></span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">also helps assess the possibility for and effectiveness of surgical intervention at each stage.<br /><br /><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.799999237060547px; text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 18pt;">The Stages of Mesothelioma<br /><br /><o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 12pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">The four stages of mesothelioma, as noted above, vary slightly within each system but can be generally characterized as indicated below. Please click into the individual pages to get more information about each stage in general and as is it defined within each staging system:<br /><br /><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.799999237060547px; text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13.5pt;"><span style="color: blue;">Stage 1 Mesothelioma</span><o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 12pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">In Stage 1 the tumor is localized, there is no lymph node involvement, and the cancer has not spread to other organs or tissues. In this case, the cancer is likely restricted to one side of the pleura and surgical removal is typically feasible.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.799999237060547px; text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13.5pt;"><span style="color: blue;">Stage 2 Mesothelioma</span><o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 12pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">In Stage 2, the tumor is larger and has invaded the lung or diaphragm. Lymph nodes may also be involved. In this case, surgical resection may be possible though the cancer has likely spread to both sides of the pleura.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.799999237060547px; text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13.5pt;"><span style="color: blue;">Stage 3 Mesothelioma</span><o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 12pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">In Stage 3, mesothelioma has invaded a single region or area such as the chest wall, esophagus, and/or lymph nodes, and surgical resection is generally ruled out as a potential beneficial treatment.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.799999237060547px; text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13.5pt;"><span style="color: blue;">Stage 4 Mesothelioma</span><o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<br style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.799999237060547px; text-align: justify;" />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.799999237060547px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 12pt;">In Stage 4, mesothelioma has invaded multiple regions such as different areas of the chest wall, the diaphragm and/or the pericardium. Lymph nodes are also involved and the cancer has spread to other organs. Surgical removal provides no value in this case as the disease has likely metastasized well beyond its origin.<br /><br />Source <o:p></o:p></span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small;"><span style="line-height: 16px;">http://www.mesothelioma.com/mesothelioma/stages/</span></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="font-size: 13px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 12pt;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Diagnostic image tests like x-rays, CT scans and MRI's are useful in obtaining more information about the cancer including how far it is progressed. Each method provides another piece of information for your doctor to assist him/her in making an accurate diagnosis. Chest x-rays are used to identify abnormalities in the lungs including unusual thickening, mineral deposits and fluid in the chest area. CT scans are capable of providing images of the same location from many different angles. MRI technology uses magnetic fields rather than x-ray to provide additional views.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<ul style="font-size: 13px; font-weight: normal; line-height: 20.799999237060547px; text-align: justify;" type="disc">
<li class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 12pt; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><i><span style="color: blue;">PET scan</span></i></span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">- Positron Emission Tomography, more commonly referred to as a PET scan, is a nuclear medicine diagnostic technique. Nuclear medicine involves introducing a small amount of radioactive material into the body (in this case, intravenously) to help doctors determine if the body is functioning properly. PET scans in mesothelioma patients are often used in conjunction with CT scans. PET scans can be particularly helpful in determining if the cancer has metastasized beyond its point of origin.<o:p></o:p></span></li>
<li class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 12pt; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><i><span style="color: blue;">CT Scan</span></i></span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">- A Computer Tomography scan or CT scan, as it is more often referred to, is a commonly utilized method for locating the tumor in the body and determining the extent of the disease. Doctors will often prescribe a CT scan if mesothelioma is suspected because it offers more detail than a traditional X-ray. The CT scan provides cross-sectional imaging of the internal body structures that can be reconstructed on a computer monitor.<o:p></o:p></span></li>
<li class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 12pt; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><i><span style="color: blue;">MRI</span></i></span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">- A magnetic resonance image, more commonly referred to as an MRI, is a noninvasive method used for diagnosing mesothelioma within the body. The MRI uses a magnetic field and radio frequency pulses, transmitting them to a computer. Traditional MRI equipment consists of a cylinder within which the patient lies. The MRI poses no risk for patients, though some find the enclosed spaces uncomfortable. These patients may request a mild sedative to allow them to remain still and calm during the procedure.<o:p></o:p></span></li>
<li class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 12pt; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><i><span style="color: blue;">X-Ray</span></i></span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">- An x-ray is a commonly utilized mechanism not only for cancer diagnosis but for many different respiratory abnormalities, including bronchitis and pneumonia. Nevertheless, given that the symptoms of these respiratory disorders closely mimic those of malignant mesothelioma, often a chest x-ray is the first imaging technique used in a mesothelioma diagnosis. X-rays are particularly adept at identifying the proliferation of fluid within the pleural cavity, a symptom of mesothelioma known as a pleural effusion. If effusion is detected in the pleural cavity, doctors will often prescribe a surgical biopsy to test the fluid for malignant mesothelioma cells.<o:p></o:p></span></li>

<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">A biopsy is an important diagnostic procedure recommended by doctors for patients presenting with signs and symptoms of mesothelioma that have a history of asbestos exposure. Fine needle aspiration (FNA) is the less invasive type of biopsy that can be performed. FNA biopsy may be done on a pleural-based solid lesion, or cancer-associated fluid may be extracted through a syringe and then tested for the presence of malignant cells. Upon determining the presence of malignant cells, cancer specialists will determine the cellular classification of the malignancy and if mesothelioma is, in fact, present. However, it is not uncommon for there to be no cancer cells in the fluid or an insufficient number to make a definitive diagnosis even when cancer is present.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<li class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 12pt; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><i><span style="color: blue;">Needle Biopsy</span></i>- The needle biopsy is considered the less invasive biopsy procedure. Commonly, a more substantial biopsy of cancer tissue is generally recommended for patients in whom mesothelioma is suspected, such as a core biopsy. This may be done as a CT-guided biopsy from outside of the chest, or sometimes a small lung surgery such as a video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS), in which a surgeon uses small surgical tools with cameras and biopsy equipment to look inside the chest along the pleural surface (pleuroscopy) with a minimally invasive approach. It is often helpful and sometimes necessary for a surgeon to do a VATS and directly biopsy suspicious nodules in order to establish the diagnosis<o:p></o:p></span></li>

Nevertheless, these procedures are sometimes necessary to make a conclusive diagnosis of mesothelioma. Surgical biopsy can be particularly useful once a diagnosis has already been established. Once cancer is effectively staged, treatment recommendations can be made based on the best possible scenario for each individual patient’s circumstances.<o:p></o:p></span></li>

<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Pleural mesothelioma is not always easily detectable. Frequently, in the early stages of the disease, such as</span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="color: blue;">stage 1 mesothelioma</span>, symptoms may be mild. Patients usually report pain in one area of the chest that never seems to go away, weight loss and fever. Occasionally, other symptoms are more severe and include problems with breathing due to fluid build up in the chest. A CT Scan of the chest area has proven to be the best test for identifying how far along the disease has progressed.<br /><br /><o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Peritoneal mesothelioma originates in the abdomen and will frequently spread to other organs in area including the liver, spleen or bowel. Severe abdominal pain is the most common complaint that patients first experience. There may also be a discomfort level with fluid buildup in the abdomen as well. Other symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma may include difficult bowel movements, nausea and vomiting, fever and swollen feet.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20.799999237060547px; text-align: justify;">

<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 12pt;">The survival rate for those diagnosed with peritoneal mesothelioma is typically in the range of approximately ten months from the time that they first started experiencing the symptoms noted above. However, outcomes are quite variable from one patient to another, so population-based statistics should not be presumed to limit the outcome for an individual patient.</span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 12pt;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">What factors help determine a mesothelioma prognosis?<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 12pt;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">When an individual is diagnosed with mesothelioma or any other kind of cancer, one of the first questions they will have is “How long do I have to live?” This is a scary question - and a hard one to ask - but one for which most cancer patients will eventually seek an answer.<br /><br /><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 12pt;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">It is very difficult for oncologists and members of a patient’s medical team to give a definitive answer to this query. Indeed, every case is different and cancer can be an unpredictable disease. Sometimes, cases that look hopeless turn out to be not so bleak. In other cases, cancers that don’t look so bad progress quickly and result in an untimely death.<br /><br /><o:p></o:p></span></div>

That doesn’t mean, however, that there won’t be exceptions and that this dour outlook will not change in years to come, especially as more and better treatments are developed.<br /><br /><o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 12pt;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Currently, a number of different issues determine the mesothelioma patient’s prognosis. These include:<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 12pt;">
<b><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Type</span></b><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">-</span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="color: blue;">Mesothelioma</span></span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">classified as one of three types, depending on the tissues involved. The epithelial type accounts for about 50 percent of all cases,</span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="color: blue;">sarcomatoid mesothelioma</span></span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">is seen in 15 percent of diagnosed patients, and 35% have the mixed type of the disease. Those with</span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="color: blue;">epithelial mesothelioma</span></span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">have a better survival rate than the other types.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 12pt;">
<b><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Location</span></b><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">- Mesothelioma is also classified on the basis of location. For example,</span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="color: blue;">pleural mesothelioma</span>, which attacks the lining of the lung, is the most common, accounting for approximately 8o percent of all cases. Those with this type of cancer have the best rate of survival.</span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="color: blue;">Peritoneal mesothelioma</span>, found in the lining of the abdomen, is the next most common and is diagnosed in about 10 -15 percent of mesothelioma victims. It is generally harder to treat. Less common types are very difficult to treat, including pericardial and testicular mesothelioma.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 12pt;">
<b><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Stage of the disease</span></b><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">- The prognosis for</span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="color: blue;">mesothelioma cancer</span></span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">depends on how early the disease is diagnosed and how soon treatment can begin. Because of the disease’s extended latency period, it is often not diagnosed until it has reached Stage 3 or 4, when</span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="color: blue;">mesothelioma symptoms</span></span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">finally appear. Sadly, many of these symptoms are common to a wide range of respiratory diseases including many that are less serious, like the flu or pneumonia. This often results in misdiagnosis.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 12pt;">
<b><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Metastasis</span></b><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">- When a</span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"><span style="color: blue;">mesothelioma diagnosis</span></span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">is finally made, oncologists will often find that the cancer has spread - or “metastasized” - from the location of the primary tumor - usually the pleura - to other parts of the body, often to the nearby organs as well as the lymph nodes. The extent of the metastases will determine what type of treatment is recommended as well as the prognosis.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 12pt;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Life expectancy for those diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma depends on a number of factors including, general patient health, cancer stage at diagnosis, and the eligibility of the patient for certain treatment options. Those diagnosed with early stage cancer and in generally good health will have a more favorable prognosis than those diagnosed with later-stage disease.<br /><br /><o:p></o:p></span></div>

<b><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13.5pt;"><span style="color: blue;">Mesothelioma Survival Rate</span><o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 12pt;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Most survival rates for cancer are quoted in regards to what is commonly known as the relative five-year survival rate. This indicates the number of patients who are still alive five years after they are diagnosed with the disease. Currently, the five-year survival rate for mesothelioma victims is approximately 10 percent. Though this is a very disappointing statistic, it represents a modest improvement from the numbers seen 10 years ago and is much higher than it was 20-30 years ago.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 12pt;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">The current one-year survival rate for mesothelioma patients is about 40 percent. This has also increased significantly in the last 10 years. Unfortunately, however, the prognosis for most mesothelioma patients remains poor overall. Many still die less than a year after diagnosis, with the average survival rate being 10-11 months, according to the American Cancer Association.<br /><br /><o:p></o:p></span></div>

<b><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13.5pt;"><span style="color: blue;">Mesothelioma Remission</span><o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 12pt;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">Mesothelioma is one of the most aggressive types of cancer and can quickly metastasize from its origin into the lungs, abdominal cavity, and lymph nodes. As a result, very few mesothelioma patients go into remission. However, if treated properly and early enough, many patients have been able to extend survival rates long beyond previous expectations. Treatment options include surgical resection, chemotherapy, and <span style="color: blue;">mesothelioma radiation</span>.<br /><br /><o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 12pt;">
<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">While there is currently no cure for mesothelioma, many patients have had success in managing their cancer with traditional treatments like chemotherapy and surgical methods. Some patients diagnosed with mesothelioma have survived many years after what was an initially unfavorable prognosis.<br /><br /><o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">During the last decade, the plight of mesothelioma sufferers has gained more attention and more research dollars have been funneled towards the study of this disease and the discovery of new and novel drugs and treatments to provide more hope of a better prognosis for the mesothelioma sufferer.<br /><br /><o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 12pt;">Scientists have been working on new tests that strive to diagnose the disease at an earlier stage. For example, the Mesomark® assay is a simple blood test that measures the rate of Soluble Mesothelin-Related Peptides (SMRP) in the blood. This biomarker is released by mesothelioma cells into the bloodstream and SMRP can be elevated for many years before symptoms appear and an actual diagnosis of the disease is made.<br /><br />Source <o:p></o:p></span><span style="font-family: Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: xx-small;"><span style="line-height: 16px;">http://www.mesothelioma.com/mesothelioma/prognosis/</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">As with any disease or health condition, <span style="color: blue;">mesothelioma</span> researchers have, over time, collected statistical information about mesothelioma. These statistics can help us learn about the proclivities of the disease and its incidence and potentially help future patients as we learn more about mesothelioma.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 18pt;">How common is Mesothelioma?</span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">New cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed in between 2,500 and 3,000 Americans each year. These numbers, while significant, would indicate that mesothelioma is still a relatively rare disease, though incidence is expected to rise in the next decade according to projections.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 18pt;">What is the Typical Age at Diagnosis?</span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">The first diagnosis of mesothelioma typically occurs in men and women between the ages of 50 and 70 years. Mesothelioma patients, certainly, have been diagnosed at ages younger than 50 and older than 70, but diagnoses for those age groups are considered statistical anomalies.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 18pt;">Does Mesothelioma Occur in a Particular or Racial Demographic More than Another?</span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">Mesothelioma is much more common in men than women, due mostly to occupational <span style="color: blue;">asbestos exposure</span> being more common among men of industrial labor sites. That is not to say, however, that women cannot be diagnosed with mesothelioma. In fact, recent evidence suggests that mesothelioma incidence in women may rise in the coming years as secondary exposures to asbestos can manifest in the form of a positive <span style="color: blue;">mesothelioma diagnosis</span>. Also of note is that mesothelioma is much less common among African Americans than in Caucasians, the reasons for which researchers are still investigating.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 18pt;">What are Typical Patient Survival Rates Following a Mesothelioma Diagnosis?</span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">As mesothelioma is often diagnosed in its advanced stages, the prognosis from mesothelioma is often in the range of a year after diagnosis. If diagnosed early enough, however, survival may potentially extend over many years. Patient survival rates are often contingent on the treatments available to the particular patient.</span></div>

<b><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 13.5pt;"><span style="color: blue;">Mesothelioma Latency Period</span></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">Typically, there is a great deal of time between an individual's exposure to asbestos and the development of asbestos-related health complications. Mesothelioma is associated with a long-latency period (often 20-50 years) after exposure. Over a long period of time, lodged asbestos fibers slowly inflame the lung's external tissue, often serving as a pre-cursor to the development of<span style="color: blue;">malignant mesothelioma</span>.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 13.5pt;"><span style="color: blue;">Adult Mesothelioma</span></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">Mesothelioma is most common in adults. Adults who have asbestos exposure history are typically those most at risk for the development of malignant mesothelioma. It can take many years for those exposed to asbestos exposure to exhibit the effects of exposure and, as such, mesothelioma is most often diagnosed in older individuals, often up to 40 years following exposure.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">Childhood diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma is extremely rare, although it has been documented. Mesothelioma is known only to be caused by exposure to asbestos and takes many years following exposure to asbestos to manifest in adults. Generally speaking, childhood mesothelioma is considered to be unrelated to asbestos exposure.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 13.5pt;"><span style="color: blue;">Mesothelioma and Women</span></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">Many women that have been diagnosed with mesothelioma had no direct exposure to asbestos from working in industrial job settings. Instead they discover that they are victims of second-hand asbestos exposure that occurred while washing their husband's clothes that came home from work with asbestos fibers on them.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<b><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 13.5pt;"><span style="color: blue;">Mesothelioma Prevention</span></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">Mesothelioma is known only to be caused by exposure to asbestos, a naturally occurring fibrous mineral that was used for many years as an industrial insulation component. As such, the best mesothelioma prevention is the avoidance of exposure to asbestos. However, in recent years, physicians and cancer specialists have been developing a mesothelioma vaccine that will arm the body's immune system with cancer fighting anti-bodies and antigens in those who are at risk for the development of mesothelioma.</span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">Recent studies by researchers in the Netherlands have found promising results in preventative therapies for mesothelioma. Using cancer-fighting antigens within the body's immune system, mesothelioma patients have responded positively in most cases when treated with the mesothelioma vaccine. The hope is now that this therapy can be applied to those who may be at risk of developing mesothelioma in the future, particularly those who have been exposed to asbestos but have yet to develop asbestos disease.</span></div>
